Hummingbirds & Bee Balm

A rare opportunity to catch a hummingbird’s excursion into our garden last summer, was made possible by the cell phone left propped and aimed at the garden ..and a lot of waiting and sifting through many, many dozens of minutes of otherwise boring footage.  It took a bit of effort, and while it was quite worth all the trouble I probably won’t be pursuing a career in nature films any time soon.

If you’re looking to attract Hummingbirds to your home, you’re almost assured success by adding Bee Balm to your garden.  There are a wide range of color varieties, but the brighter red ones have always been my favorite, and I suspect theirs as well.  As a perennial swift to spread extensively, it’s a good idea to let them have a clearly delineated section of the garden to prevent crowding to other flowers.   They also love the Honeysuckle vine with its orange flowers that is draped over an arch just off-screen in this bit of video.  Perhaps next time I will attempt to catch them visiting that.
